Founded in 2007, Firefly is a full-service carrier headquartered in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It is a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines and it is the first community airline in Malaysia. The airline has two hubs for operations: Selangor, Penang International Airport (PEN) and Subang, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB). FireFly launched its first operation on April 3rd, 2007 from Penang to Kota Bharu.
The name Firefly was chosen to signal out the distinctive characteristic of Firefly as agile charming, brilliant and luxurious. Firefly has grown to become one of the best premium airlines in Malaysia over the course of a few years.
Firefly has a separate management body which is apart from its parent company. The focus of airline is to provide competitive air service to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia.
Firefly airline operates a single-class cabin and two fare bundles (a) FlyBasic and (b) FlyPremier. The cabin features comfortable, spacious seats with decent legroom to stretch feet and relax. Based on the fare bundle the passengers select, in-flight and on-ground facilities would vary. On FlyBasic fare bundle, the seats are pre-assigned during Firefly booking process, but it features cheap air tickets. FlyPremier fare bundle qualifies the passengers to enjoy a number of benefits such as extra checked baggage, change of time and access to airport-waiting lounges. The passengers who opt for FlyPremier fare are indulged in the luxurious facilities in the lounge.

Firefly allows the FlyBasic fare passengers to carry one piece of hand luggage to the passengers’ cabin free of charges. The carry-on bag can weigh up to 7 kgs maximum and the dimensions may not exceed 56*36*23 cm. The FlyBremier fare passengers are allowed to carry one piece weighing 10kgs of hand luggage. The carry-on bag exceeding the allowed size and weight might be permitted onboard in return of minimal fees.
In addition to the one carry-on piece onboard, each passenger is also allowed to carry one personal item such as a briefcase, handbag, purse or pocketbook,an overcoat, blanket or wrap, camera, laptop or iPad a pair of binoculars, reading materials, baby food for consumption during the flight, and crutches for patients
Firefly airline provides its passengers with 20kg complimentary checked-baggage allowance for the FlyBasic fare and 30 kgs for FlyPremier. Further, non-electrical chairs or collapsible baby strollers can be checked in cost-free on both fare bundles. If a passenger has excess baggage and is interested in purchasing weight, Firefly airline offers three excess baggage options: 5kg, 10kg, and 15kg. Excess baggage should be purchased either online, through call or sales channels before the passengers arrive at the airport. The maximum weight limit per piece is 32 kgs. Sports equipment is allowed in return for sports equipment handling fees.
Firefly offers all the passengers complimentary different flavors refreshments and snacks onboard the aircraft based on the duration of the flight. Onboard flight shorter than 45 minutes, juice and hot beverages are served and onboard flights longer than 45 minutes juice, hot beverages along with cupcakes/ light snacks are served.
Firefly provides a user-friendly online check-in to make check-in process hassle-free for the passengers by avoiding the long queues at the airport. Online check-in service is available for Singapore and Malaysian domestic flights. Firefly passengers can also check in for their return and outgoing flights as early as 14 days and as late as 1 hour before their scheduled departure time. Passengers traveling with a shared code airline can easily check in online for their return and outgoing flights separately. Firefly online booking is one step ahead of its competitors and it enables passengers to check in as early as 24 hours and as late as 1 hour before the scheduled departure time. Online check-in is not available for passengers traveling with infants, passengers who have special needs and group bookings of more than 9 passengers In addition to online check-in, Firefly passengers can utilize the self-service machines. Kiosk check-in is available for Firefly airline passengers and passengers traveling with a codeshare airline. To be able to proceed with the kiosk check-in, passengers with Firefly tickets need to either enter their Firefly confirmation reference or Malaysian Airlines. Once the check-in process is completed, the boarding pass is issued.
The third method for check-in is the conventional airport check-in. Firefly check-in counters at the airport open 90 minutes before the scheduled flight and close thirty minutes before departure for the domestic flight. For international flights, the check-in counters are closed forty-five minutes before the departure time.

Firefly offers Firefly Corporate Travel Program for corporate purposes. It enables travelers to be in charge of their traveling plans. With this program, passengers have greater flexibility in their flights, reservations, and become a part of Firefly's fast-growing network and get warm hospitality.
Firefly was founded and commenced operations in the same year with two 50-seater Fokker aircraft. Also, Firefly signed an agreement to acquire ten ATR 72-500 to replace the Fokker 50 airplanes.
Firefly took delivery of the first batch of five ATR72-500 aircraft based on the acquisition agreement of 2007, so by the end of this year all the Fokker 50 aircraft were phased out.
Firefly took delivery of the second batch of 5 ATR72-500 aircraft.
Firefly fleet size witnessed significant growth in this year. Firefly announced that it was going to purchase four ATR72-500 aircraft in the option clause of the purchase agreement. In November, Firefly announced an order for 30 Boeing 737-800.
Firefly’s first Boeing 737-800 entered service in January.
Firefly’s parent company placed an order to purchase 30 ATR 72-600 aircraft, 20 of the ordered aircraft would be delivered to Firefly
